Newborn Session FAQ

When should I book a newborn session?

It’s best to get on my calendar as soon as you know your due date or anytime after. Early is always ideal to ensure date availability. I only take a specific number of newborns each month. We will book your session based on your due date knowing that baby can come a few weeks before or after. Once baby is here you will reach out to me to coordinate a date.

Why do you photograph babies between 5-14 days old?

This age window is excellent for capturing those sleepy newborn photos you typically see shared. Between 5 - 14 days babies are still sleeping most of the day and aren’t as likely to be distracted by noises or outside stimuli. Additionally, they are much more flexible, making poses that we all love possible. We can schedule up to 21 days but I always recommend sooner rather than later.

Are siblings included?

Yes! These are incredibly special pictures. In addition to preserving memories of mom and dad with baby, siblings are always welcome. After these family pictures, you are welcome to have dad take the older kids out to do something fun while mom stays to relax. Feel free to get your thank you notes done or take a nap!

What about parent photos with the baby?

I highly encourage parents to get in the frame with their new little one.

For dads, there is nothing quite like a tiny newborn baby in their big hands, or how they fit on their forearms. Moms are sometimes more hesitant to get in the pictures. I completely understand as a new mom that you are personally experiencing a lot of changes, both physically and emotionally.

You can rest assured that I only photograph moms from the chest up and truly focus on your face and your emotional connection to your new baby. Don't let short-term concerns interfere with beautiful photos of you and your new baby. I promise you won’t regret it!

How long do newborn sessions take?

The short answer is 2-3 hours. As long as baby is happy and sleeping, I’m able to finish almost all my sessions in about 2 hours. But baby runs the show and I always listen to your baby's needs which sometimes means a diaper change, feeding or just a short break to cuddle with mom. Baby's needs always come first.

What do I bring with me?

Just you and the baby! I have all kinds of props, blankets, wraps, headbands and hats for both boys and girls in a range of colors and shades. A few things to remember to pack is milk for baby, diapers and a binky if your baby uses one.

What about props for newborn sessions?

During our pre-session consultation, we can discuss the props and colors I have available and what your vision is. I love to match nursery colors for displaying photos later on your walls. Feel free to check out my social media to view samples of some of my more popular props and colors. Want something different than what you've seen? Definitively let me know! I love working with my families to create exactly what they are hoping for. Don't forget we are capturing your memories and creating art for your home.

Are all the poses safe for my newborn?

ABSOLUTELY! I have taken numerous courses on newborn safety, how to keep them from overheating, how to position their heads and arms safely to achieve our desired look with no risks. Sometimes that means creating a composite by combining multiple photos into one. I have also made sure to take all recommended vaccinations.
